Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with death motive of Smail-aga Čengić in texts of Bosniak revival literature. Many different literary and non-literary texts have been written on this topic that mainly discussed how far the writers have deviated from historical truth in presenting the event. The focus of the research is an epic by Ivan Mažuranić, a story by Osman-Aziz, a poem by Safvet-beg Bašagić and folk songs that deal with this topic. The texts of the revival literature on Smail-aga appeared in an interval of two years. The research showed that both Bašagić and Osman-Aziz first commented the Mažuranić's epic, and then relied on folk songs that deal with the same topic. The literary works were composed in a similar way, in the spirit of the poetics of Romanticism, but the way of the main character observation was not the same. Unlike Mažuranić, who saw Smail-aga as a tyrant, Osman-Aziz saw him as a righteous man and Bašagić as a hero. Such perception of the characters was conditioned by the non-literary context. The research showed the need for comparative studies of works of Bosniak revival literature with works within the South Slavic interliterary community in order to obtain more secure conclusions about the nature of its poetics.
