Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the Ukrainian reception of reports by P. Smoleński "Funeral of the Cutthroat" and W. Szabłowski "Machine Guns and Cherries. Stories of Good People from Volyn" as texts which are provoking the reinterpreting of the causes/consequences of the traumatic historical experience of the two nations, form a different perspective of the perception of the tragic events of the mid-twentieth century, lead to dialogue and intensify the discussions of Ukrainians and Poles to find new formats of mutual understanding. Author has interpreted and convincingly proved the important role of non-fiction literature in the creation of a public resonance of complex historical problems, which leads to a reinterpretation of the causes/consequences of the traumatic historical experience of two nations and causes renewal of the conversations over the Ukrainian-Polish borderland as a zone of acceptance of Other or potential conflicts.
