THE FAULT IS OF THE EARTH. ELEMENTS OF TRADITION AND FATE IN THE TRAGEDY BODAS DE SANGRE AND THE MOVIE LA NOVIA

Summary/Abstract: Garcia Lorca’s connection with tradition and traditional culture is one of the most beautiful motifs of his artistic opus. A number of studies of this prominence of Lorca’s poetics turn out to be a double-edged sword, thus it is extremely important to find a subject that will not be a simple repetition of what has already been said. Therefore, our goal is to give our small contribution by analysing the elements of tradition and fate in Lorca’s tragedy Bodas de sangre (Blood wedding) and Paula Ortiz’s movie based on Lorca’s 639 tragedy, La novia (The bride). We consider this study to be useful primarily from the perspective of understanding and interpreting Lorca’s work in the present time considering that the movie had its premiere in 2015. In the symbolism of Lorca’s motifs certain constants can be recognised which can clearly be associated with traditional culture. Paula Ortiz recognizes Lorca’s adamancy on certain motifs and translates the ones she considers important and impressive onto the big screen. Lorca’s symbols inevitably had to be repeated in the movie, or else without them a significant part of the story would be lost.
