Summary/Abstract: Being independent, considered by many of us as the default, is for people with disabilities often a luxury. Independent living refers to the ability of persons with disabilities to make choices and decisions about their own lives and to enjoy the same degree of autonomy as persons without disabilities. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities reaffirms the right of persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life. This means that people with disabilities should have the opportunity to have their own home, just like any person, and equal access to all services – from transport, information and communication, as well as public facilities and services.
