Summary/Abstract: The term “Balkan” has obvious negative connotations due to an oversimplifying perception of this geographic space. But the complex socio-historical and cultural reality of the Balkan Peninsula contradicts simple perceptions. It is true, the local tensions, conflicts and wars quite frequently created the impression of an atavistic insecurity and instability in the region. It is one of the reasons why the dominant stereotype of this perception is that of difference, of opposition even between Europeanism and Balkanism. Nevertheless the two concepts are not as mutually exclusive as appearances would suggest; culture and literature are privileged forms of harmonizing the differences and of imposing a common language to Eastern and Western Europe. The example chosen in support of this idea is that of a literary category, the ballad, illustrated by the creation of Radu Stanca, the most important representative of the Sibiu Literary Circle in Romania.
