Summary/Abstract: The Scandinavian countries are known for their model of social policy and advantageous environment for starting a family and children. Solidarity is the basic principle based their system of social protection. Achieving, to a large extent, gender equality in the region concerned allows for the development of parental leave schemes, not only legally but lso in practice. This article analyzes the possibilities for maternity, paternity and parental leave, linking the impact on women's employment.
