Fr. Wojciech Danielski as a researcher of sacral national heritage and translator-poet co-creating post-conciliar liturgical culture

Summary/Abstract: Fr. Wojciech Danielski (1935–1985), a priest from the Warsaw archdiocese, is known as a researcher of the sacral national heritage. His research subject were historical liturgical books and the cult of saint Wojciech and Stanislaw related to them. He analyzed and described 752 liturgical manuscripts. One can note a particular combination of history and contemporary times, i.e. translations of prayers, hymns and songs. In other words he adapted to current Polish conditions what had been present in national and foreign literature for hundreds of years and which had been expressed in many languages and in many geographical areas. His scientific path was related to the Polish history and its reflection in liturgical books and to the liturgy history in the times of post-conciliar liturgy renewal. Now it seems worthwhile to ask two question: (1) to what degree fr. Danielski’s work which is devoted to liturgy history and which also presented poetry created for its needs, particularly in the Middle Ages, is present in the scientific research after 1985 and currently. It should be asked in the context of saint Wojciech and the anniversary of his martyrdom, celebrations in Gniezno and related scientific publication; (2) to what extend liturgical texts, particularly the ones derived from the tradition and the ones present in the European liturgical culture which belong to widely understood Christian culture, starting from the late 1960s which were translated by fr. Danielski, are present now in celebrations and in confessional usage.
