Summary/Abstract: This paper focusses on a specific structure in the German grammar, the so called brace construction as it is studied by learners of German as a foreign language. The main thesis states the fact that learning is not only a cognitive but also an intercultural process and while grammar can influence the worldview of its speakers, a completely new structure in a foreign language can have a major impact on learners and will alter their way of thinking. The paper gives an overview of the main rules for the word order within the topological fields of a sentence. The paper also briefly describes three major grammar theories: the traditional grammar, the valence grammar and the topological field description.
