Summary/Abstract: This article aims to underline the manner in which Tacitus uses descriptive discourse in Book 1 from Histories, in two forms - the art of the portrait and the tableau, when investigating the mind of individuals and that of communities. When describing the characters of Histories, Tacitus uses the portrait as a means of physical and moral characterisation. The tableau is used when contouring the epoch, the ruling system and the folk. The writer describes the scenes with the help of epithet, comparisons, antitheses, the descriptive scenes merging with narrative and argumentative sequences in a historical text relevant to current times
