Summary/Abstract: Nicolae Vasilescu Karpen (1870–1964), a Romanian academician, scientist, engineer, physicist, researcher and inven tor, valedictorian of the National School for Bridges and Roads in Bucharest in 1891, an important contributor to the establish ment of the Department of Mines and Petroleum in 1914, the cornerstone of higher education in the field of hydrocarbons, is the inventor of the enigmatic electric pile that has operated with out interruption for over 60 years. His original works in fields such as mechanics, elasticity, ther modynamics, aerodynamics, telegraphy, telephony, electronics, electromagnetism, kinetics, electrochemistry, chemistry phys ics, geophysics etc. made Nicolae Vasilescu Karpen to achieve a prominent place in world science.
