Summary/Abstract: Frege has invented the contemporary standard logic. The theory of the absolute identity is based on Leibniz’s principles, on Frege’s axiomatic formalisation and on Russell’s definition. The formal aspect of this theory does not present logical difficulties. But a vast theoretical debate concerns the identity concept. We think that identity leads to insurmountable metaphysical difficulties, with crucial consequences on the epistemological and scientific level. However, this fact is not sufficient to make us give up a concept as fundamental as identity. For example, Wittgenstein’s position, the rejection of identity, is excessively radical. Identity is a limit of our rationality.
