About the origin and the evolution of decorativism

Summary/Abstract: As the Romanian philosopher Constantin Noica wrote, we can consider that the human’s native need of performance and entertainment “expresses a deeper one, namely that of “mirroring in another, “forgetting about themselves” but also to confirm “as a self-consciousness” - “the recognition by the other and through him becomes the self knowledge”. [1] The theater costume is a distinct category from the other clothing typologies manipulated by fashion as a universal social phenomenon. It does not depend on trends or cyclical changes in fashion and has a timeless value. The theatrical costume may have a relation with what fashion trends dictate at the time of performance or during the period evoked in the play, or, on the contrary, it may not take into account the social, cultural and clothing characteristics of the moment invoked. The theater costumes are the materialization of certain messages and symbolic content that often exceeds the limits of the conventional. În efortul de a ajunge la o expresie personală, independentă și complet aparte față de tot ceea ce înseamnă tradiția stilurilor istorice din trecut, artiștii de la finalul secolului al XIX-lea au pus bazele unei noi mișcări, unde gustul pentru frumusețea meșteșugului, pentru calitățile estetice ale ornamentului și decorativismul limbajului vizual erau de primă importanță. Stilurile 1900 se conturează, așadar, într-o manieră distinctivă, prin care bogăția și diversitatea motivelor ornamentale, a tiparelor și a detaliilor, prezente în toate ramurile artistice ale acestei mișcări, dau naștere unor efecte decorative de o frumusețe remarcabilă. În ciuda conceptului fundamental ce susține detașarea față de imitarea trecutului istoric, ornamentica sferei 1900 nu a putut rămâne complet străina față de tot ceea ce a precedat-o – dimpotrivă, originalitatea și complexitatea decorativismului specific acestui stil inovator se datorează istoriei lungi pe care ornamentul o parcurge timp de mii de ani, de la reprezentările antice până spre mijlocului secolului al XIX-lea.
