Summary/Abstract: In this article, its author presents the beginnings of institutional career guidance in Poland and the factors that contributed to its development. It shows difficulties associated with training staff for the purposes of career guidance. A lot of attention has also been devoted to the problems connected with the organization of orientation and career guidance in the school environment. Furthermore, the article illustrates the process of introduction of orientation and career guidance to the school environment which was initiated in the interwar period. It recalls solutions introduced which were utterly negated by the authorities of Polish People's Republic. Remaining in this background, the author presents the activities of post-war educational authorities aimed at creating the school a center providing students with basic support in choosing a profession. Indirectly, she draws attention to the fact that personnel entrusted with the implementation of orientation and vocational guidance at school must possess appropriate competences in this field themselves.
