Summary/Abstract: The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute hosted an international conference on August 9–11, 2009 commemorating the anniversary of Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, called the Maharal of Prague (ca. 1525–1609). Multiple academic institutions combined their efforts to make this special event happen: The Historical Society of Israel, Tel Aviv University, The Open University of Israel, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. The National Library of Israel organized a parallel exhibition on the premises of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem called ‘Maharal: Books, Places, Contexts’, placing his own works in a wider context and innovatively tracing its later reception in the realms of subsequent stages of Polish Hasidism. The extended versions of the conference papers will be published in Hebrew by The Zalman Shazar Center of Jerusalem.
