Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study is to show that Montaigne’s life, marked by the painful experience of political and religious violence, unfolds in two successive and contradictory stages, which shape the substance and the form of the Essays : one devoted to citizen action, the other in reading and meditation. This rupture makes it possible to put man and the self on trial through writing and reclassifying the skeptical posture as a historical and didactic project of reconciliation with oneself, the world and with God.
