Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the place, function and purpose of political mythology in The Mountain Wreath. Approaching to Njegoš`s poetic work by contextual reading and interpretation from the aspect of history of political ideas the author considers rhe main political myths used by Njegoš and points to their function in the work. In particular, this paper analyzes the myth of so called „the exterminations of the Turkish converts,“ as the central myth in Njegoš’s mythopoetics, which in The Mountainn Wreath takes the role of the founding myth. The author places this myth in the broader framework for considering political or founding myths in general. The myth is at the end placed in the wholeness of the political ideas of The Mountain Wreath.
