Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this article was to present, the functioning of the self-government of the Galician village by the example of the commune Brzezowa. The many issues related to the activities of local authorities have been analyzed: the practice of granting the right of belonging to a commune (“Heimathrecht”), ensuring the safety of residents, educational policies as well as maintenance of local roads. The source basis was the Book of Protocols of the Commune Council in Brzezowa for the years 1904–1934. In addition, research has been carried out at the National Archives in Kraków and at the Parish Archives in Dobczyce. The legal acts constituting the basis for the functioning of the city authorities could not be omitted. It was therefore possible not only to recreate the activities of local authorities, but also to show many aspects of the life of the inhabitants of this Galician vilage.
