New Poetry of Native America: What River Flows through the Body of NDN?

Summary/Abstract: Kuligowski discusses a new anthology of poets affiliated with various Native American tribes. New Poets of Native Nations (2018), edited by Heid E. Erdrich, is presented in the context of “Indigenous Literatures,” a field whose history straddles academic archiving, interpretations by non-Native literary scholars and Indigenous expressions. The purpose of this anthology was to fill a historical and cultural gap, given that notions of indigeneity and heritage have undergone many changes since the publication of the last anthology in this field more than thirty years ago and. For Kuligowski, the fact that political, anti- (auto-)colonial and queer elements occupy a central space in this extensive anthology serves as evidence for the deep shifts in notions of indigenous identity and consciousness, including creative consciousness.
