Summary/Abstract: In the 1960s, American anthropology was a socially engaged discipline close to the ideals of the counterculture. Two examples of this closeness are the innovative conference formats: The American Indian Chicago Conference, organized by Sola Taxa, and Marshall Sahlins’ idea of “teach-ins,” practiced at most rebellious universities. The first of these events became a milestone for the Native American self-determination movement. The second, on the other hand, effected a profound transformation in thinking about universities, faculty-student relations, and the public importance of colleges and universities. In the conclusion of the article, I will try to answer the question about the legacy of these countercultural innovations in the world and in Poland.
