Summary/Abstract: Spiru Haret belongs to the golden generation of the 19th century scientists who have had a decisive contribution to the development of modern Romania and to the unification of the Greater Romania. After thorough studies in Western schools – which were then considered the most prestigious in the world – Spiru Haret returned to the home country and entered the political life, as member of the Liberal Party, which had modern and progressive views. In cooperation with Ion C. Bratianu, the charismatic leader of the Liberal Party, Spiru Haret dedicated half of his life to the activity in the Parliament aiming to modernize the country. Irrespective of the topic he worked on (education, religion etc.), Spiru Haret’s ideas and the laws proposed and supported by him have had a great impact on his contemporaries and followers, influencing both the rulers during the totalitarian period and those in nowadays Romania. Henceforth, we could argue that Spiru Haret can be considered our contemporary.
