Summary/Abstract: The present study deals with German-Hungarian cultural relations in the four decades from 1949 to 1989, i.e. the foreign cultural policy of the People’s Republic of Hungary towards the two German states and the cultural diplomacy of the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany towards Hungary during the Cold War era. In doing so, it deals with a – hitherto unresearched – section of the history of German-Hungarian relations that was not only very complex and multi-layered in terms of content, but was also particularly changeful, contradictory and charged with tension in terms of its course and strongly influenced by antagonistic ideological factors.
