Summary/Abstract: The protection and improvement of the environment represent one of the five priority areas defined by the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Republic of Serbia. The concept of sustainable development is most often considered to be in connection with environmental protection, social development planning, environmental, economic and political issues. Now, this concept has a central place in the consideration of the long-term prospects of survival and progress of mankind. The use of renewable natural resources contributes greatly to environmental protection. Renewable energy technologies not only allow access to environmental sources of energy, but they also provide new challenging scientific research projects and create new jobs for scientists and engineers[2]. Serbia has significant solar potential, compared to other countries in the region. Exploiting this potential would contribute to increasing the overall efficiency of the energy system of our country. In the local community Zrenjanin, there is a certain extent of recognition of the solar potential in Serbia, and on the basis of that, solar energy is often used in public institutions and private facilities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the awareness of citizens about sustainable development, environmental protection, renewable energy and solar energy. The results of this analysis are to serve for planning comprehensive research, which could be applied on a larger sample, in order to improve information and knowledge on important issues of environmental improvement.
