Summary/Abstract: Secret, or black, propaganda is a manipulative form of information operation when the addressee is not aware of the real source and disseminator of information. In the course of World War II, and especially after 1943, both British and US propaganda transmitted information to Hungary through all available media. While radio broadcasting is the best known area of this activity, the two allied powers used other media and means as well. The paper surveys the institutional background of Anglo-American information operations, and its changing political direction. Through the reconstruction of some English and American propaganda operations, some light is shed on the practice of programs aimed to influence public opinion at the critical turns of World War II, on a secondary front of the secret war.
