Summary/Abstract: Regional tensions in general, and boundary disputes in particular, naturally focus attention on political aspects of energy development in the Eastern Mediterranean. But commercial issues are no less important. Indeed, not least because the underlying resource base is gas, rather than oil, they are likely to prove the determining factor in deciding how these resources might reach key prospective markets in the European Union, and in what quantities. This paper examines both the political and commercial factors that impact on gas development in the Eastern Mediterranean including the underlying resource base, key boundary disputes, prospects for gas exports in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG) or via the proposed Eastern Mediterranean Pipeline (EMP), as well as such underlying factors as the global energy transition and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
