Summary/Abstract: The family Barth gave Sibiu the first private printing press in its history, out of the precincts of the town, established in the XVIth century; it had had various owners until then. Johann Barth had seen the profitability of such an enterprise since he was a printer’s apprentice. He set up his own printing shop that he left to his son, who had the same name, mid XVIIIth century. In the decades of the activity of the first two Barths, the printing press released various books in the official languages of Transylvania – Latin, Greek, German, Hungarian. Johann the IInd Barth, it seems, had the intention to publish in Romanian too, and this idea will be carried out by his son Petrus Barth (Petru Bart). Meeting the necessary requirements, he will print in the last two decades of the XVIIIth century school textbooks, religious literature, popular novels, scientific books, brochures, calendars, leaflets in Romanian. Johann the IIInd Barth (Ioan Bart) will continue his father’s work, and after his death, the printing press will be taken over by his son-in-law.
