Summary/Abstract: The paper is a historical and sociological research that attempts to examine the migration of Dobrudja’s Turkish and Tatar populations from the rural to urban settlements during the communist period. The first part of the paper traces the general frameworks regarding the history of these populations in Dobrudja and also its relation with the communist regime. This is followed by a diachronic and quantitative analysis of how the industrialization influenced the general demographic evolution of the Romanian population and its movement from rural to urban space. The Turkish and Tatar migration from the rural southern parts of Dobrudja towards the main urban settlements in the seaside area will be analysed in its political and socio-economic context, represented by the urbanisation and industrialisation processes that characterized the entire communist period. Based on the field research, specifically on interviews with the members of the Turkish and Tatar communities in Romania, and also on the analysis of the Communist census, and adopting the quantitative method, the paper identifies the periods of maximum flow, the main reception towns, the types of migration reasons and the relocation models. The last part of the paper highlights how and to what extend the integration of Turkish and Tatar ethnics into the Romanian communist urban society changed not only their ethnic and religious identity but also their traditional pattern of living and working.
