Summary/Abstract: Situated in Central Asia and counting approximately 29 million inhabitants, Afghanistan represents a unique mosaic, made up of Pasthuns, Tadjiks, Hazars, Beluks, Nuristans, Aimaks, Uzbeks, Kirghiz and Turkmens. Out of these, the Pasthuns, which are Sunni Muslims, represent the majority of the Afghan society and the ethnic bases of the Taliban movement. The ethnic and spatial closure of these groups, including the dominant Pasthun group, prevented the formation during the 20th century, in Afghanistan, of a coherent and consensual nationalism. Moreover, the involvement of the western countries and of the neighboring ones contributed to the further fragmentation of Afghan politics.
