Aspects of the Cluj Urbanity in the British Travel Literature of the 19th Century

Summary/Abstract: The study analyses the perceptions of Cluj’s urban society reflected in the 19th Century British Travel. The research is based on coordinates like the relation between the social expectations and the encountered realities, by the British travelers, between the proper or improper pre-built images. Other coordinates of this study are the ratio between the pre-existing mental structures and the discovered realities, the shaping of stereotypes and the ideological influences in this respect. The structure of this study overlaps on issues approached by the British relations in the second half of the 19th Century. The analysis includes topics like: the general appereance of the town, architecture, culture, religion, the local elite, the ethnic and social coordinates.
