Summary/Abstract: Various types of vehicles are a sustainable element of the material environment of the cinema. From the train in the first film of the Lumiere brothers to more or less fantastic spacecraft what the movie characters travel with is an expression of certain attitude to the world and our civilization. As an art of visual representation, cinema in general presents reality through photographic accurate imagery. They function as objects, signs of the times and bearers of the social status of the travellers in them. But at the same time, they can serve as social spaces – not just as a place to stay during the trip, but as an environment for the manifestation and catalysis of certain social behaviour.
