Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on various automatic translation systems from the historical perspective in order to show three major directions of its development. The oldest ones, translating word by word, the subsequent ones — based on interlingua, and the newest ones — which use neural networks and machine learning. The paper presents various linguistic and interdisciplinary points of view, methodological proposals and prototypes, which have been made from the 17th to the 21st century.
