Summary/Abstract: C. Brancoveanu (born 1654 – died 15th August 1714) was a great nobleman from Muntenia,gentleman of Tara Romaneasca between 1688 and 1714, nephew of the ruler Serban Cantacuzino.During the time of his reign, Tara Romaneasca has gone through a period of cultural boom anddevelopment of the spiritual life. As an orphan, without a father from the age of 1, he was raised by hisuncle, steward Constantin Cantacuzino, who offered him a valuable education, learning, among othersGreek, Latin and Slavonic. During his reign a large number of political and diplomatic actions havetaken place in order to stop Czar’s and Turkish expansion in south-eastern Europe.The main directions followed by the Romanian ruler: strengthening the reign’s role;reorganizing of the fiscal system; promoting close relationship with Moldova and Transilvania. Until1709 Constantin Brancoveanu has succeeded in maintaining a balanced political strategy between theOttoman Empire and the Roman Empire. On 15th august 1714 Brancoveanu was martyred togetherwith his entire family.
