Summary/Abstract: Although after the First World War Romania doubled its area, the economic situation wasquite difficult, the economy returning to the situation from 1914 only in 1925. Immediately after thewar, the state would intervene directly in foreign trade, accepting export in compensation and banningexports of food of basic necessities. As the main instrument of trade policy, the Customs Tariff ofRomania was revised in 1921, 1924, 1927 and 1929. Grain exports, which had the largest share in thetrade balance, benefited from state aid. Between 1931 and 1939, the state controlled foreign trade, promoting and supporting exports by introducing export premiums by product category, a measure tocover the lack of currency in the context of the payment of foreign debt.
