Summary/Abstract: In this paper we discuss the evolution of machine translation (MT) and provide an overview of the experimental researches, the gradual transformation, and the impact they had on the profession. We also tackle different types of MT systems, culminating with neural machine translation (NMT), and bring in the results of several surveys conducted in the European language industry, to show how MT integrated into nowadays professional workflow and triggered important changes in translators’ job. These changes and the interrelationship between human and machine translation call for a differential translation competence, and this encourages both scholars and professionals to make projections for translator training and look for solutions and useful practices.
