Summary/Abstract: AT THE BEGINNING OF 1848, THE "SPRING OF THE NATIONS" WOULD REFRESH THE POLITICAL ELITE IN WALLACHIA AND MOLDAVIARETURNING FROM PARIS WITH OR WITHOUT DIPLOMAS ATTESTING TO THEIR STUDIES, THOSE WHO APPEARED AT THE HEAD OF THE REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENTS IN THE PRINCIPALITY WERE DETERMINED TO DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO CHANGE THE FACE OF THE TWO SMALL COUNTRIES ON THE EDGE OF EUROPE. IT WAS THE IDEAL OPPORTUNITY TO SEEK THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE SUPPORT AMONG THE POPULAR MASSES WHO WERE CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EVENTS FOR THE FIRST TIME. POLITICAL OR ECONOMIC REFORM PROJECTS HAD BEEN WRITTEN BEFORE. BUT IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT SUCH WRITINGS WOULD BE KNOWN NOT ONLY BY THEIR AUTHORS AND A FEW CLOSE ONES, BUT ALSO BY THOSE WHO WOULD HAVE BENEFITED FROM THE ADOPTION OF SUCH REFORMS. THIS GENERATION WILL BE THE LONGEST-LIVED AND MOST SUCCESSFUL IN THE HISTORY OF ROMANIANS. C. BRĂTIANU WITNESSED TWO OF THE GREATEST MOMENTS, THE UNION OF MOLDAVIA WITH WALLACHIA ON JANUARY 24, 1859 AND THE ACHIEVEMENT OF INDEPENDENCE FROM THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE.
