Summary/Abstract: The article evokes Professor Atanasie Popa, originally from Bihor (b. 1896, in Câmpanii de Sus-Beiuş), a man concerned with old Romanian literature, a mathematics teacher, who thaugt many generations of students that became teachers. Although he was retired he was not a man to waste time, so he was always working, frequenting libraries, continuing to inform himself and writing articles, communications, studies. He had set aside his researches on wooden churches and those on the art history, focusing on the study of some manuscripts. He had assembled himself an impressive collection of manuscripts and old books that he had classified and deciphered, many of his conclusions being published in the pages of various kinds of magazines. Since he was close to G. Giuglea and the team of philologists from the former Museum of the Romanian Language, later Institute of Linguistics of the Academy, led by Emil Petrovici, he visited quite often his friend’s library to consult various works that were useful to his philological investigations. His work of reconstituting the fragments of old Romanian literature he collected proves not only the major interest he had in ancient Romanian literature, but also his love for what was written, as a sign of veneration for the efforts of priests and deacons who wanted to have at hand the books of worship or of wisdom. The work of this exemplary predecessor would be worthwhile an edition that would gather his researches.
