History in the vision of Dumitru Almaş. From the manuscripts of the great historian (1908–1995)

Summary/Abstract: I am one of the speakers who – at the Scientific event hosted by the Romanian Academy on May 28, 2008 – celebrated a century since the birth of Dumitru Almaş – a complex personality: historian and writer, professor and trendsetter. Being proud to have met Dumitru Almaş, I had the opportunity to exchange ideas with him until one day when, at my request, he wrote a few pages on a phenomenon which he considered “a pleasant, delightful, blissful pursuit for both the human body and spirit”. Most of the respective manuscript, which in 1995 became the afterword of one of the books I have written, is now in my possession and I am rendering it for publication, not only to make known another field which Dumitru Almaş was interested in, but also to contribute to a more comprehensive grasping of his personality. The work demonstrates once again how important it was for Dumitru Almaş to record history so as to recollect the past of any social phenomenon. I feel honored to have been given these pages written at the end of last century by one of the great Romanian historians, teachers and writers. They provide evidence of both his scholarship and literary talent, which conveyed national and international historical facts in an easily comprehensible manner. In my opinion, this quality represents the main reason for which Dumitru Almaş’s work will occupy a distinct place in Romanian culture and world historiography.
