Summary/Abstract: Dictionaries are commonly seen as dull lists of words, even by lexicographers themselves as in the famous definition by Samuel Johnson where lexicographer is defined as: “a writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the signification of words.” In contrast to this image of drudgery, I see dictionaries as rich depositories of social practices and I deem the lexicographer’s work a constant dialog with the prevailing cultural, social, and ideological context. In that, I am following the ideas of socio-cognitive metalexicography, which strives “[...] to establish a triangular communicative model of lexicography and views the bilingual dictionary as a system of intercultural communication between the compiler and the user.” I have proposed the following research construct for the study of Slavic dictionaries.
