An increased demand of translators posit new dangers for the Lithuanian language

Summary/Abstract: An increased demand of translators and interpreters (particularly after Lithuania's accession to the European Union) leads to an idea that the fate of the Lithuanian language is being rapidly transferred into the hands of translators and interpreters. Thus the Lithuanian language faces new dangers, since the profession attracts many qualified as well as less qualified people, who are very often little concerned about their level of knowledge of Lithuanian. The paper is based on examples taken from a small booklet, and they testify to the fact that translators in their texts frequently fail to escape gross mistakes of Lithuanian. There are several proposals put forward on how to improve the education of translators and interpreters and increase their professionalism. It has been also pointed out that we suffer from an obvious lack of contrastive (English-Lithuanian, also German-Lithuanian) publications, grammars, textbooks, encyclopaedias, which would illustrate obvious typological and textual differences in the two languages and cultures. Reference is also made to the problems of computer translation, which would also require qualified specialists of the Lithuanian language as well as specialists of foreign languages and computer specialists, all working hand in hand on the basis of already established theories and methodologies of translation.
