Summary/Abstract: The article presents several competency models of the academic staff, in which the individual competencies are usually grouped into more general areas or profiles - pedagogical, research and managerialorganizational. It presents also the selected results of international comparative research of the perception of importance by the research team defined competencies and professional profiles by students and academic staff from Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. On the basis of empirical research data, the educational needs of academic staff are then determined, which can be met by specific (self) education of academic staff at the beginning or during their academic career.
