Summary/Abstract: In the article, definitions of autonomy on the basis of glossodidactic literature (H. Komorowska, W. Wilczyńska, A. Janowski, M. Pawlak, K. Pawłowska, K. Droździał-Szelest, E. Koralewska) are given. The issue of the correlation between the autonomy of the student and the autonomy of the teacher is analysed. The attention is paid to the borders between the student’s autonomy and the teacher’s autonomy. The issues connected with shaping the autonomy during foreign language lessons are presented. It is emphasized that in the autonomic approach, task approach is the key issue, as well as teaching strategies which simplify foreign language teaching and learning.
