Summary/Abstract: In the article the author states main problems in translating substandard language for stage texts. This paper first gives a brief overview of the substandard phenomena based on Polish researches, inter alia, Roman Lewicki’s work – Przekład wobec zjawisk podstandardowych. Afterwards, authors bring arguments in favour of challenges which translator must to face in Stage Translation. It should be noted that not all the methods, which are used in literary translation can be implemented in translation of stage texts. Then, author analyses drama Marriage by N.V. Gogol and its translation to Polish language. The analysis show factors which have influence on translator’s decisions and possible expenditures. Substandard vocabulary has informational meaning about speaking person and it is one of the most significant elements in translation in general. Maintain in its entirety is virtually impossible.
