Summary/Abstract: The democratic backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe is by no means a Polish and Hungarian affair. Following the 2007 European Union accession, Romania is equally concerned. With the EU conditionality lifted, Romania witnessed a political hooliganism aimed at weakening all neutral intermediary political bodies and the Parliament, as legitimate representative body. In their attempt to consolidate in power, the right-wing populists attack the Constitution, the Constitutional Court and the Ombudsman, depicting the opposition parties as democratically illegitimate. In such a trouble populist environment, the civil society could be a suitable counterweight to the steep dedemocratization. However, the most robust and highly visible part of the civil society has yet to break with the ideological conformity, that is with the neoliberal tendencies of right-wing parties in government.
