Parents´ Opinions on Verbal Feedback, its Informational and Motivational Function, During a Coronavirus Pandemic

Summary/Abstract: The present study analyzed the opinions of parents during the emergency situation of the new coronavirus pandemic, when a distance form of education was implemented. The research sample consisted of 296 parents and 309 children. Data collection was carried out using the questionnaire method and disclosed the preferences of the type of assessment for parents and their views on the functions of verbal feedback. According to results of statistical data analysis parents prefered verbal feedback to grading system and agreed for it to become a standard part of school evaluation. Majority of parents of the first grade students preferred verbal feedback, whilst most parents of the second grade students prioritized grading system. Parents accepted the informative function of verbal feedback as important, however grading system was considered to be more motivating. On the contrary, the majority of parents of students with special needs and first grade students viewed verbal feedback as motivational. Among the benefits of verbal feedback, information and motivation provided to the child were mentioned most frequently by the parents. Insufficient comprehensibility was perceived as the most frequent shortcoming of the verbal feedback.
