Summary/Abstract: This article examines the Referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union and draws on the reasons that the UK voted to leave. In the article is argued that the free movement of people within the European Union, as an expression of an unacceptable immigration policy for most English citizens, is only a visible reason for Brexit. The referendum is seen against the background of the populist right-wing Eurosceptic discourse, which is manifested through strong elements of British nationalism. In the text notes that the Brexit vote reveals a wider and deeper social tension regarding the widening of the social divide between people by age, education and skills, wealth, geographical location and social values. Therefore, the article gives meaning to the text in terms of some social consequences.
