O RÓŻNYCH ODCIENIACH CHĘCI –NA PRZYKŁADZIE NIEMIECKIEGO PRZYSŁÓWKA GERN(E) I JEGO NORWESKICH KORESPONDENCJI W KORPUSIE RÓWNOLEGŁYM

Summary/Abstract: The paper reports on a study of contextual meanings of the German adverb gern(e) and its Norwegian cognate gjerne in Germanto- Norwegian translation in parallel corpus data. It briefly describes the Norwegian correspondences to the German adverb, and the languages under investigation are seen as “mirror images of each other”. Finding out to what extent the cognates function as mutual correspondences, enables us to confirm the similarities in meaning and function between them, pertaining to 49% in translations and 31% in sources. On the other hand, some clear differences are identified. The confirmed correspondences show how broad the meaning of gern(e) is as compared to gjerne used as a means of linguistic imagery in Norwegian. Moreover, their high variety in Norwegian sources gives a more detailed picture of the conceptualization of the mental state conceived in German as gern(e) and branded as “willingness” in the context of the article.
