Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the foundations of the European culture. It describes in a synthetic form the symbolic sources of culture like ancient Greek philosophy, Roman law, Christian religion, the cultural heritage of barbarian tribes and the thoughts of the Enlightenment. The specificity of European culture and identity is based on continuous dialogue with the past.
