Andreas the First and Yaroslav the Wise

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to defi ne the exact date of the marriage between King Andreas I and the daughter of the Kievan Grand Prince. The question is difficult because there are no exact records either about the flight of Andreas and his brothers from Hungary, or their appearance in Kiev. Upon a careful analysis of the political circumstances in Bohemia and Cracow – the route from Hungary to Kiev – one can conclude that the arrival of Andreas in Kiev might be dated between the years 1034–1036, and the marriage to 1043. The paper also examines and rejects as scholarly unacceptable the hypothesis launched by Szabolcs Vajay about the earlier marriage of Andreas with an unknown princess.
