Summary/Abstract: Created at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Childrens' Hospital of Chernivtsi was destined to provide special care for the sick children, especially those from the lowest strata. The need proved to be even greater as only a few of the children were admitted to special medical facilities, according to the conception of the time that the family and the doctors could carry out the home treatment. However, the beds in the general hospitals were barely accessible for adults with severe diseases, the facilities were poor, and the costs, most of the time, daunting. Repeatedly, the members of the Provincial Parliament of Bukovina were asked to act in such a way that the city of Chernivtsi should enter the „civilized world”, adding to its patrimony useful buildings for the less fortunate and, ultimately, indicating the community’s empathy and welfare. The article presents the pretext, the general and immediate causes that led to the construction of the medical complex, the terms in which the negotiations took place within the local administration, the opening moments and the way in which the press related the beginning of the hospital’s prestigious activity in the capital of Bukovina.
