Summary/Abstract: Separatist movements are important political phenomena on political scene of several European states. This study addresses cases of three European "stateless nations", Scotland, Catalonia and Flanders, focusing on the key incentives of separatist discourse from a comparative perspective: political claims with a historical background (shift from autonomist claims to separatist tendencies), cultural and linguistic claims (role of language as national attribute), economic impulses (and their social impact observed in the results of public opinion polls) and the role of the European integration. The conclusion points to possible future scenarios in these three regions with the deepening of autonomy as the most probable one, and analyses obstacles to other options, i.e. status quo maintenance and secession.
