Alterka – Money or a Gift? The Social Money Project

Summary/Abstract: This article presents the structural properties of alterka (the local currency of Warsaw) and the ways of conceptualizing alterka by the creators and users of Wymiennik [Exchanger] platform, where transactionsin an alternative currency are registered. Although alterka fulfills the classic functions of money, itis not recognized by the leaders and users of the Exchanger as such, which points to the contradictorymoral meanings ascribed to official money andlocal currency. Alterka is understood as a tool for establishing fairer economic and social relationships, and even as a gift. The author describes the scale ofthe local currencies movements around the world andthe reasons for the collapse of the Warsaw initiative.
